What do you do when your heart starts to ache? Do you just give up and throw in the towel or do you push through the pain and keep going? What is heartache anyway?
The dictionary definition of heartache is emotional pain or distress; sorrow; grief; anguish. How do you deal with these things?

So the other day I went on a 5K park run with a friend of mine. I haven’t been running for a while so I was a bit out of practice, but anyways …we decided to do the run together. About 1.5 km into the race I felt like I was fighting to breathe, my mind was telling me that I couldn’t do it, I should just quit and I don’t have enough energy for this. This is what I call heartache! As I started to slow down I was telling myself (and my friend who I was running with) that it was too much; I can’t run for 5K; I’m going to quit – but she encouraged me and we kept going.
Then on the second lap, now almost 3K into the race, it happened again – I felt like I couldn’t breathe so I told my friend to go ahead without me and I’ll meet her at the finish line (I just wanted to walk in peace lol). But again she wasn’t having it, she said we can walk for 30 seconds then we need to run again. Every time I tried to stop running she encouraged me to keep going. So after a couple more 30 second walks we kept running – when we got to the last lap my friend told me that she was going to sprint just before the finish line so I followed her and we didn’t stop until we got to the end. I was so happy to have finished it; I looked back at the times I wanted to quit. That’s what heartache does to you, it makes you want to give up – you start telling yourself “I can’t do this anymore.” But really ..you can!
What is causing you pain and heartache today? What is causing you to feel like quitting? Someone offended you? Jesus said forgive them! People gossiping about you? Jesus said no weapon!
The motions that I went through when trying to run the race makes me think of The Race of Faith. This Christian race is like a marathon! We’re going to need endurance in order to finish this one. Things might happen along the way that cause you pain and heartache even to the point of wanting to quit but you have to keep going . We might get to a point where we are literally fighting to breathe, it’s ok to slow down and catch your breath but it’s never ok to quit.
On the second lap of the race as we were going past the finish line my friend turned and said to me “we definitely can’t stop here.” This was the part where all the people who finished early and the park run organisers were standing by watching and cheering us on . It’s harder to give up when you know that people are watching you – this is how we have to run this Race of Faith knowing that the Hosts of Heaven are watching us and counting on us to get to the finish line:
“…since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witness’, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the author and the finisher of our faith…” Hebrews 12: 1-2
Endurance is a noun, it is the capacity to withstand an unpleasant or difficult process without giving way. One of the synonyms of endurance is forbearing. Forbearance means patience, self- control , restraint and tolerance.
Spiritual heartache could be things such as fear, doubt, rejection, offence.
This means that if we want to finish this race we are going to have to restrain ourselves in the face of offence; we’re may have to tolerate some difficult people; we’re going to have to exercise self-control in situations of provocation and we’re going to need patience in order to see the plans and the promises of God come to fruition.
So what do you do when you’re suffering from heartache? You run with endurance! I’m talking about heartache! What do you do when people offend you – Jesus said forgive them!
No weapon formed against you shall prevail, and every tongue that rises against you in judgement you shall condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD and their vindication is from me.” declares the Lord. Isaiah 54:17

Run with endurance … don’t give up!
The merciful God of Prophecy
“I have equipped you! Take hold of your shield and your buckler and pick up the weapons of your warfare, for the weapons of your warfare are not carnal but they are spiritual, for pulling down strong holds and every high thing that seeks to exalt itself against the mind of God. Now take your position and stand and see the salvation of the Lord for I am mighty and all – powerful and all knowing.” Says the Lord.
Let’s run with endurance
